Saab Offers XWD Option to 9-3 2.0-liter Turbo Models

Saab is using this week’s British Motor Show to introduce the all-new 9-3 2.0T XWD. The Swedish carmaker’s fully automatic, all-wheel-drive system that was previously available only on the top-of-the-line 9-3 2.8 V6 Turbo, will be offered as an option for the 9-3 2.0-liter Turbo 210Hp Aero Saloon and SportWagon models. Additionally, buyers of both 9-3 variants can also opt for a sports chassis set-up, with stiffer springs and dampers, larger brake discs and 18/19-inch alloy wheels. -Continued

“This makes a very nimble handling package for the 9-3 range,” said Per Jansson, Vehicle Integration Engineer for Saab XWD. “Saab is best known for using a relatively small four-cylinder turbo engine and our XWD system makes a perfect partner. Its compact and sophisticated design improves weight distribution, as well as handling and traction.”

Saab 9-3x Crossover Scooped Alongside 9-4x SUV

These grainy pictures of the Saab 9-3x crossover sitting near the production version of the 9-4x SUV were scanned from a video taken during a presentation event by the guys over at Trollhatan Saab. Although the video images don’t really reveal much of the production version of the 9-4x SUV, we get a pretty decent picture of the 9-3x Crossover which is expected to debut at this year’s Paris Show in October.

Following in the footsteps of the Audi A6 Allroad model, the 9-3x is virtually a 9-3 Sport Combi (station-wagon) equipped with Saab’s 4WD system. In order to justify its existence, the 9-3x also features a higher road clearance as well as a few unique styling details like the scuff platting at the front and rear end along with some cladding on the sides. –More images after the jump

2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition

We’re still scratching our head with Saab’s official picture of the new 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition adorned with sunflowers somewhere in the Alps but whatev. Fact is that Saab has released a yellow version of its 2008 9-3 Convertible for the US market. The Swedes believe that, like the first-ever yellow version of the Convertible issued in 1991, this one too will obtain a collectors status in the near future as production will be limited to a few hundred units. -Continued

Based on 2.0T version with its 210 Hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Yellow Edition gets a series of standard equipment, including XM radio and OnStar, Aero look items such as 17-inch, five spoke alloy wheels and a subtle rear spoiler along with a premium audio system. The 2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition has a MSRP of $42,830, including destination charges.

2008 Saab Turbo X Making Its N. American Debut In Boston

The 2007 Boston International Auto Show, which opens to the press just after Thanksgiving on Nov. 27, is having the North American debut of the special edition Saab Turbo X (see details & images here), making Bostonians among the first here to get a look at it.

Inspired from the first black 900 Turbo (BTW, Saab will also showcase a recently acquired classic 1985 900 Turbo SPG in Boston), the all-wheel drive Turbo X is equipped with a 280 Hp 2.8L V6 Turbo engine. In addition to tuning of the suspension and its electronic chassis, throttle and powertrain settings, the Turbo X also features distinctive styling additions. The first customer deliveries of the Turbo X in the U.S. are expected during the second quarter of 2008.

UK Prices Announced For Saab’s Limited Edition 2008 9-3 Turbo X

Making its UK premiere at the MPH 2007 motor show in London, the 2008 9-3 Turbo X is a limited edition model that celebrates 30 years of Saab turbocharging. Equipped with an AWD drive system and a 280 Hp strong 2.8-litre V6 Turbo engine, the 9-3 Turbo X is offered in both Saloon and SportWagon bodystyles. According to Saab U.K., the order book for the 9-3 Turbo X is now open with first customer deliveries are expected early next year. Frankfurt Show: Saab 9-3 Turbo X

Exactly thirty years after Saab presented its first turbocharged model at the 1977 Frankfurt Show, the Swedes took the wraps off the limited edition 9-3 Turbo X. Based on the recently facelifted 9-3 Aero X, the all-wheel-drive Turbo X is equipped with a 280 hp 2.8V6 turbo engine which can combined with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. According to Saab, the 9-3 Turbo X that is available in Sedan and SportCombi variants accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.7 sec (manual). Its top speed is 250 km/h (155 mph).

Apart from the bodykit, the updated interior, the larger brake discs, the 18-inch alloy wheels and the revised suspension, what makes the Turbo X a bit more special is the standard electronically-controlled, rear limited slip differential (eLSD) which can transfer up to 40% of torque to whichever wheel has more grip. It is unveiled today (11 Sept), exactly 30 years after Saab surprised the automotive world at Frankfurt when it revealed its first turbocharged model. That set a trend other manufacturers were to follow. Now Saab unleashes turbo power for the first time through Saab XWD, a cutting edge all-wheel-drive system that sets performance standards competitors will also seek to emulate.

With 400 Nm of torque from its 280 hp/ 206 kW 2.8V6 turbo engine, the Turbo X is the ultimate performance expression of the new Saab 9-3 range. Saab XWD features active management that not only splits torque delivery between both axles, but also between the rear wheels. This responsive system delivers a level of driver involvement and dynamic chassis control never seen before from Saab.

In addition to tuning of the suspension and its electronic chassis, throttle and powertrain settings, the Turbo X features distinctive styling additions that enhance aerodynamic performance.

The Saab Turbo X adds a new dimension in chassis control to Saab’s unrivalled experience in turbocharging. It is the result of a development program that leverages the full potential of Saab’s innovative XWD system, with the car’s sports tuned suspension, brakes and electronic control systems all aligned to meet a single need: driving satisfaction.

Saab XWD is an active all-wheel-drive system designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability. (Refer to New Saab 9-3 release for full technical description). Its sophisticated electronic control allows fine balancing of drive torque, not only between the two axles but also between the rear wheels. In effect, this stretches the performance envelope of the chassis, for example, raising the threshold at which ESP throttle and braking interventions are triggered. The result is closer driver involvement through ‘positive force’ chassis control.

The driving benefits of the XWD system are best appreciated out on the open road. Data from the ABS/ESP sensors - measuring wheel speed, yaw rate and steering angle – is utilized by the Saab XWD control module. Rear drive is instantly applied to balance oversteer and understeer characteristics, improving stability and roadholding.

Driver control is taken a step further on the Turbo X by the eLSD, the first application of an electronically-controlled, rear limited slip differential in this segment of the market. It uses inputs from the rear wheel speed sensors and can transfer up to 40% of torque between the drive shafts, to whichever wheel has more grip. When cornering hard, this yaw damping effect helps the rear of the car more closely follow the direction of the front wheels.

To exploit the full benefits of Saab XWD, the chassis of the Turbo X has been lowered by 10 mm and the springs and dampers stiffened to minimize body movement. To maintain a constant ride height irrespective of load, self-leveling dampers are fitted at the rear.

Stopping power is also increased with larger brake discs fitted: internally ventilated (345 mm diameter x 30 mm) at the front and externally ventilated (292 mm diameter x 20 mm) at the rear. Standard 235/45 R-18 tires ensure excellent mechanical grip for the 18-inch alloy wheels.

The powerhouse at the heart of the Turbo X is a 24-valve, 2.8-liter V6 turbo engine generating 400 Nm of torque between 2,150 and 4,500 rpm and maximum power of 280 hp (206 kW) at 5,500 rpm. The advanced specification includes a lightweight, all-aluminum construction with a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks for perfect balance, variable inlet valve timing and twin-scroll turbocharging. It is offered with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

This responsive, high torque powerplant is the perfect partner for Saab XWD. Together, they give the Saab Turbo X sporty, all-wheel-drive performance and handling characteristics that will appeal to all enthusiastic drivers who seek a rewarding experience behind the wheel.

The Saab Turbo X visually communicates its focus on driving performance by extending the bold, progressive design themes of the new 9-3 range. Offered only in metallic jet black, with the front grille and all exterior detailing accented in a matte grey titanium-like finish, it represents a contemporary expression of its illustrious black 900 Turbo forebear.

Distinctive styling additions are designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency, as well as emphasize the Turbo X’s performance focus. At the front, a deeper lip spoiler and integrated air intake contribute to reduced drag while also increasing air flow to the engine and intercooler.

At the rear, the re-profiled bumper and insert panel lowers the point of air flow separation, further reducing drag and assisting high speed stability. The Sport Sedan features a rear spoiler that extends the line of the trunk deck, reducing high speed lift forces at the rear axle. The standard SportCombi already has a similar spoiler that extends the rear roof line.

The Turbo X is further distinguished by unique, 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch available as an option outside US/Canada markets) with a grey titanium-like finish that evokes the look of Saab’s classic three-spoke design. Twin, rhomboid-shaped tailpipes complete the exterior additions.

Inside, the ‘black turbo’ theme is continued throughout the cabin. The sports seating, with additional bolstering, is upholstered entirely in black leather. The sporty ambience is further emphasized by a carbon-fiber finish to the main fascia, door inserts, glove box and gear shift console which is unique to the Turbo X.

The driver benefits from improved ‘feel’ through the addition of a thick-rimmed, soft grip leather steering wheel. Seating comfort can be taken a step further with an optional premium, natural leather interior, which includes perforated bolsters for the front seat squabs and backs.

In recognition of Saab’s turbo heritage, the Turbo X boost gauge is a replica of the original 900 Turbo display. Owners will also enjoy a personalized greeting when they get behind the wheel and switch on the ignition. A unique ‘Ready For Take-off’ message (‘All Systems Go’ in US/Canada) flashes in the main instrument display. The owner’s name, with the edition number of the car, can also be programmed for display by the supplying dealer.

There’s no need to wait until the opening of the Frankfurt Show on Tuesday to get a glimpse of the Saab 9-3 Turbo X as member of “Trollhattansaab” freed a set of official images. The commemorative version is a “blacked out” 9-3 2.8 Turbo AWD whose design echoes -or at least that’s what Saab believes, the black Saab 99/900 turbos. We saw every single version uncamouflaged, we saw official renderings, we even saw press pictures; about time for Saab to come out with the “officially” official images and press release, don’t you think? Better keep your pants on though cause like the pictures, the press release is nothing more than a teaser, revealing what we already know or can see for ourselves: redesigned front end inspired from the Aero X concept, sales start this August. New Saab 9-3 Range: Sharper Looks Showcase Enhanced Performance

The new Saab 9-3 range will feature bold styling, inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car, backed by cutting edge technology for greater driving appeal. .

With all-new front bodywork, ‘signature’ lighting, new door panels and rear styling features, the latest generation 9-3 acquires a more focused, assertive stance, reflecting the introduction of technical advances aimed at delivering an even more rewarding experience behind the wheel.

Most noticeable is the sharper frontal styling, which adopts grille and hood themes first seen on the Aero X concept, together with a return of Saab’s classic ‘clamshell’ design. This new ‘face’ is reinforced by other exterior changes that all combine to give the range a clearer, more distinctive Saab identity.

“We are introducing significant developments across three key areas: design, performance and handling,” says Jan Åke Jonsson, Managing Director of Saab Automobile. “The result is a major step forward in strengthening the visual and driving appeal of our core product line-up, which accounts for about two-thirds of global sales.”

The new 9-3 range comprises Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible models, each offering a unique ‘tri-fuel’ engine choice of gasoline, diesel or BioPower (E85). Available in three forms, Linear, Vector and Aero, the range goes on sale from August.

2008 Saab 9-3 Facelift Official Images Leak

Come on; don’t tell us you're surprised; it's like an accident just waiting to happen. Apparently, like us, none of you will care about the “how’s & why’s” so lets jut get to the facts. The 2008 9-3 features a completely redesigned fascia inspired by the Aero X concept, new tail-lamps, Cadillac BLS door-handles and from May 2008, the first AWD version in the range fitted with a 290Hp 2.8 V6 Turbo. We’ve only got two front view pictures of the 2008 9-3 Estate for the time being, but stay tuned on Carscoop, cause something tells us that we’re going to have the full press pack (at least image-wise) sooner than you think. –Continued after the jump

2008 Saab 9-3 Sedan & Estate: Official?

We’re pretty sure that you too have had about enough with the 2008 Saab 9-3 leaks the past few months, so let’s just skip the blah-blah and get straight to the story. These allegedly official teasers CGI’s (computer generated images) were sent this morning to the mailboxes of several “John Doe’s”. Coincidently, some of those “John Doe’s” were members of Saab forums (Saabscene & Trollhattansaab) –need we say more? While one should be cautious about their authenticity, there shouldn’t be a doubt on whether Saab would actually send CGI’s instead of real images; let us remind you that the Swedes did the same with the Aero X Concept last year.
